The Bells of Christmas Day, Of Peace on Earth, Good-Will to Men

A century and a half ago, Longfellow penned the well-known carol, “Christmas Bells.” Out of character for a Christmas Carol, it spoke of sorrow and war, and the muting of peace and good-will. The poem was written in the midst American Civil War, in which Longfellow’s son fought for the Union.
I can’t help but think of how this relates to today. It’s Christmas Eve and South Sudan is in the midst of war. Many are dead; others are seeking refuge. I felt it appropriate to share this well know song, as it parallels with this Christmas.

Please pray for South Sudan. For "God is not dead, nor doth He sleep.” Pray that “The Wrong shall fail, The Right prevail, With peace on earth, good-will to men."  Remember that Christmas is about the Christ Child and the hope he brings. If only the whole world knew of this hope. All of the cookies, presents, and bustle dim in the light of all this. Thank God for the Christ Child, our Messiah!

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
and wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along
The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Till ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime,
A chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
And with the sound
The carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

It was as if an earthquake rent
The hearth-stones of a continent,
And made forlorn
The households born
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And in despair I bowed my head;
"There is no peace on earth," I said;
"For hate is strong,
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!"

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The Wrong shall fail,
The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men."

Are Thorns Choking Us?

We‘ve all heard Jesus‘ parable about the sower and the seed. I don‘t know about you specifically, but I think most of us who follow Christ accepted the Word a while back, and out of the four types of ground that the seed was sown in, we assumed that we are fertile ground. We glaze over the first three and conclude that they’re poor responses to the gospel; the fourth option is the only one that seems like a good response, so we conclude that since we follow Christ, we are by default, that one.

Let’s take a moment and look at those who are the seed that fell among thorns. Scary isn’t it? It says that they’re choked. We’re not being choked, are we? It also says that they yield no grain. Later Jesus explains they're choked by three things: the cares of the world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things. Our purpose is to bear fruit, and if we are choked, well, then we don’t bear fruit. To not bear fruit is definitely a problem. So let’s look at the three things that can choke us.

The cares of this world. There are so many cares in this world we carry that burden us. We’re worried about what our friends, family, and co-workers think of us. We worry about our health, our living situation, our job, being comfortable, and being successful. We’re also worried about putting ourselves at risk.

The deceitfulness of riches. We don’t realize we’re rich, but we really are. We have a house, car(s), flat screen TVs, smart phones, and all sorts of other luxuries. We eat out multiples times a month, grab coffee on the way to work, and go see the latest movies in the box office. Then after spending money on the excess that we don’t really need, we take whatever’s left and hide it away for a rainy day, or so one day we can have “nice” things, or so we can survive the zombie apocalypse.

The desire for other things. In life, we’ve placed our desires are on a priority list, even if we don’t realize it. When we place one thing before another, it becomes our priority. When Jesus says “other things” it’s clear that He means anything that keeps us from bearing fruit. What things do we desire more?

So are we being choked by thorns? It’s easy for them to creep up and choke people. We need to be good soil and produce much fruit. Jesus talked about yielding a crop—thirtyfold, sixtyfold, and a hundredfold! We must push away the thorns and work hard to produce fruit.

Imagine what it would be like if we pushed aside the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things. We’d reach out more to our community, family, and friends with the love of Jesus. We’d also be willing to devote our riches to reaching everyone for Jesus. I also don’t think missionaries would struggle raising financial support if people let go of the three things Jesus referred to as choking thorns, for we’d be eager to reach the ends of the earth!

““Listen! Behold, a sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it. Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and immediately it sprang up, since it had no depth of soil. And when the sun rose, it was scorched, and since it had no root, it withered away. Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain. And other seeds fell into good soil and produced grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.” And he said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

The sower sows the word. And these are the ones along the path, where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them. And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: the ones who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy. And they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away. And others are the ones sown among thorns. They are those who hear the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. But those that were sown on the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold.””

Trip to Dallas and Sight of the Future

It was Yael's first plane ride and we headed to the airport before the sun rose. We were flying halfway across the country for some training. We'd been to Dallas before, we actually lived there for a year, a year ago. But Yael had never been there before, outside my belly that is. It was rather eventful for her since she is a wiggly, rambunctious, 8 month old little girl. Sitting still is definitely not on her list of specialties, and actually, it be on the opposite end. And so both plane rides went about like this... climb on the plane, scream, squirm, let Mommy nurse me to sleep, sweet dreams, wake up, look around, wiggle, squirm, and play. Luckily, on the second plane ride there was more space for her to play in the seat with me. She also really enjoyed playing in the mirror on the bathroom wall (it was the cleanest airplane bathroom I've ever seen!).

Yael has met so many new people this week, who love her and have loved her even before she met them. It was a wonderful thing to see everyone that we've seen here in Dallas. We also met with people who will be our family on the other side of the globe. We can wait to join them there, where they have gone ahead of us.

It's exciting to see as things come closer and closer together. The nearer we get, the more solid plans become and the more we can taste it. One day in the next couple months we hope to see the sun rise in a different place than in Delaware or Dallas--we want to board a plane and move to a place where we'll step out of out mud hut, in the hot heavy heat, to watch the sun rise over the African plain. This is where we're headed, this is where we'll make our home on earth, for a while.

100 DAYS to 100% -- Day 22

I can't believe we are on Day 22 already! As week look back over this campaign so far, we see God's faithfulness. We asked for his blessing, and we have received it. Our support is increasing, and so are our contacts. And even though we have wished it to come much quicker, we can't deny that it is defintely coming. It is slow but it is becming steady now.

We are hanging in here and we trusting God. He has called us to go to North Africa to bring His Word to a specific people that he has choosen. He has told us to go to these people, and it will be so exciting on the day that we meet them. We will move into their village and become their neighbors, and we'll have such a message to tell them,

"God has told us to come to you, to live life with you, and to tell you all about Him!"

And we will--we will tell them all about the God of the universe, who created them, and who loves them.

We are at 40.5% of our monthly support now that we need to go. We are still contacting people to meet with them and to invite them to join us in this exciting ministry.

Please pray!

We are on our way; we're now at 40%! Praise God!

Yael had a great time in the nursery with MACU students LaVon and Amanda :)

100 Days to 100% --Day 1

Today we have begun a campaign to raise the rest of our support to move to North Africa. It is entitled "100 Days to 100%".

We are very excited about this and believe that God will bless it. God has called us to this ministry, he will provide the way. We were encouraged the other day by a humble man who is a wealth of knowledge in the Lord. He reminded us that if this is God's will and he has called us to this, then he will provide. Also, that he's brought us this far, and he is faithful, so why would he stop now?...He won't.

Today we had an increase of $50/month. Praise God.

99 days to go. 38% left.

It's just a matter of time.

If you are interested in this ministry of helping reach a people group in North Africa who don't have the Bible in their language, then we invite you to join us. Just contact us and we would love to talk to you :)

Time to Resurrect the Blog :)

I started this blog a few years back, before I got married, and before I had a daughter. Now I think it's time to get it up and going again.

This time around I plan to share life as we are on a journey trying to get to Africa. Since I wrote a few years back, we have completed our degrees and missions training, and now we are in the final step. Raising partners to stand beside us in this journey, who will provide us both with finances and prayer support. We have been working on raising these partners for 8 1/2 months now. So far we have 1/3 of the support we need.

We are hoping to leave for Africa at the end of April. We can't wait to get there! We want to go live among a people who have never heard the Word of God...because it was never translated into their language. So our plan is to live with them, share with them God's love, and to translate the Bible into their language. After sharing God's love with them we want to plant churches among them, so that Christianity will become part of their lives, part of their identity. This is our PASSION.

We need people to join with us in our mission, to stand beside us. God promises to bless those who are generous with what He has given them. This is something we want people to know--that if they give, God has promised to bless them.
